We’re delighted to announce a new bursary scheme, supported by Siemens, open to applications from secondary schools in Birmingham, London, Manchester and Newcastle.
Siemens, the leading global technology and services company that has been active in the UK for over 170 years, has supported us since 2010, and the new bursary funding means that schools that would otherwise not be able to afford to take part in the Greenpower Challenge have the chance to buy an F24 kit car for half the usual cost.
To apply, schools in the London Boroughs of Westminster, Tower Hamlets and Newham and schools in Birmingham, Manchester and Newcastle must meet various criteria and can email info@greenpower.co.uk to find out more.
Siemens’ outreach programme, the Curiosity Project, which the bursary scheme is part of, aims to highlight the excitement that a job in engineering can bring and show that anyone can be an engineer if they study these subjects. Research by Siemens has shown that 90% of students participating in the challenge intend to go on studying science.
The successful schools will receive, in addition to the 50% discount on the car kit, a £500 equipment grant for tools, helmets, materials and transport and a further £500 grant for travel and accommodation for the Kit Car Final which will take place in October 2018. The selected schools will also benefit from a local Siemens representative who will be on hand to give them advice and help to build the car.
Jeremy Way, Chief Executive of Greenpower says: “Engaging young people with hands-on projects such as this helps children to realise that studying science and maths can lead to exciting jobs such as engineering. Our programme aims to get them interested early on; it also helps to develop communication, team-building and co-operation skills, whilst also providing underprivileged or struggling youngsters with a renewed focus and goals for which to aim. We are very grateful to Siemens for undertaking a three-year agreement to sponsor Greenpower for a such a practical and worthwhile project.”
Juergen Maier, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens plc says: “We have been supporting Greenpower for many years and this is a new and exciting aspect to our partnership. By giving schools in disadvantaged communities a chance to participate, we are removing barriers and providing more young people the opportunity to advance their education in STEM. The Greenpower Challenge provides a fascinating, relevant and and dynamic experience for participants and a great insight into an engineering career.”
