Staffordshire Greenpower IET Formula Goblin Event 2017

Laura, Wednesday 28th June, 2017

8:30am on a hot summer’s day and teams are already arriving for the 11th Annual Staffordshire Greenpower Formula Goblin electric car event. During the day over 200 excited and enthusiastic primary school pupils with 30 cars from 24 schools across Cheshire and the Midlands descended on the Staffordshire Activity Centre, Seighford, all ready to go head to head in a series of challenging activities.

A colourful and varied selection of car bodywork designs were on display, all designed and made by the pupils who were competing for the Best Bodywork and Greenest Bodywork Awards. Once each car had been checked and passed by the team of scrutineers the morning session saw each team testing their driving skills as they competed in the Drag, Slalom and Timed Lap events. Excellent times were recorded by both the older Mark 1 version and the new Mark 2 version of the Goblin

car.

The afternoon session provided even more excitement and determination as teams battled it out in a series of preliminary races to decide who was to race in the ultimate final race of the day – the Race of Champions. One set of races featured the older Mark 1 cars while a second series of races featured the new Mark 2 car. The figure of eight course tested the driving skills of all the drivers with Bishops Castle eventually winning the race for the Mark 1 cars and Newcastle under Lyme

Junior School winning the race for the Mark 2 cars. An added attraction during the day was the appearance of a green Lamborghini car that the pupils were able to examine at close quarters. Newcastle under Lyme Junior School, having also won the Mark 2 car Drag Race, secured the Overall Champions trophy for the second successive year, receiving the brand new trophy donated by local company Klarius EU. St Georges C. E. Primary School, Clun were Runners-up with The William Amory Primary School taking third place.

Trophies were presented by Debi Roberts and Rod Dawes from the IMechE with each competitor also receiving a medal kindly donated by KMF.

We had tremendous support during the day from a great team of volunteer ambassadors from Siemens, BAE Systems, the IMechE, KMF, JCB, Staffordshire University, Stoke-on-Trent College and STEM. In addition, the team from Driveme gave us tremendous support throughout the day.

Thank you to everyone involved as we could not have run this day without you.
