Three way tie kicks of the 2017 IET Formula Goblin season at HMS Excellent

Laura, Tuesday 14th March, 2017

Over 180 students from 17 primary school teams travelled from various areas of both Hampshire and Sussex, to battle it out to become crowned as the overall winner at the first IET Formula Goblin event of the 2017 season at HMS Excellent. Each team completed in a slalom, drag race and sprint event during the course of the day, but results ended in a three way tie between St Mary’s School Clymping, Pennthorpe School and Funtington Primary school.

As well as the on track results, each car is judged for various supplementary awards. The battle ship inspired bodywork on ‘HMS Funtington’ created by the Funtington Primary School team, particularly caught the eye of the Lockheed Martin Engineering Director, Mark Ralphson, who awarded the team with the ‘Best Bodywork’ award.

Mark Ralphson, Director of Engineering at Lockheed Martin commented on the day "Lockheed Martin is proud to continue our involvement in the Greenpower Goblin project. This innovative and exciting initiative continues to enthuse young people and show just how exciting engineering can be. The teamwork, camaraderie and sheer determination of the teams is really impressive and great to see."

Jeremy Way, CEO of Greenpower ‘We are extremely grateful to Lockheed Martin for all of the support they have provided. This has allowed us to run the event which inspires so many children into STEM (Science, Teachnology, Engineering and Maths) related careers later on in life.’

‘The racing was extremely close between all of the teams, this has been proved by the fact we’ve had a three way tie at our first event of the year!’

‘We are equally grateful to HMS Excellent for allowing us to use the base facilities to host our event for the sixth year running, and we’re forward looking to returning again next year.’
